Painting by intuition, Marilyn Gross had very unusual experiences in the months leading up to and following the events of 9/11.
Here is the timeline.
Amidst the sanctuary of her studio, she felt she would open herself to the art that wanted to express itself through her. And so it was with this piece. Marilyn began. Reaching out, she made the first mark on the canvas. This process would go on for hours and days intermittently for roughly the next six months until she decided it was time to, "Break the Brushes", determining the work had been finalized, then naming it, and logging it in her Artist’s Log.
Finally, she stopped. What Marilyn had first felt, then evolved in her imagination and through her work was now on the unusually shaped canvas.
Sensing the work was nearly complete, as was her practice, she set the painting out of view. She would only return to the work in the coming days once she felt she could experience it freshly anew.
Marilyn “Broke The Brushes”, and acknowledged the finality of its creation.
As was her process, she put the canvas away to help her break her connection with the piece she had poured energy into for so many months.
During that horrendous day, most of the world watched in horror as hijacked commercial airliners were flown into the World Trade Center in New York, New York, USA, The Pentagon, and heroically diverted to an open field in Pennsylvania. The horrific tragic and senseless events of that day, caused at least 2,977 deaths, over 6,000 injuries, countless devastating impacts, direct traumas to billions globally and ongoing reverberations to this day.
President George W Bush, while reading to school children during a scheduled visit to Sarasota, Florida is informed of the calamities. The president was seated approximately 25 miles from a later acknowledged primary flight training point of the terrorists at Venice Florida Municipal Airport, Venice, FL and approximately 15 miles from Marilyn’s family’s home and her studio in Osprey, FL.
Marilyn’s youngest child Kevin, seeking the seeming “safety of home” visits his parents in Osprey, FL shortly after the lifting of civilian air flight restrictions.
Early in their visit, Marilyn and Kevin discuss, observe and assess the work anew.
Striking previously obscured imagery revealed itself in ways very new. They nearly immediately recognized the similarities between the media’s broadcast and published images of 9/11 and the details amalgamated in the work. The degrees of representation and their startling complexities were gradually noticed, discovered, questioned and found to be undeniable and shocking.
Marilyn, family and a few close others recurringly observe, analyze and reflect on the work, Angels, Angels Everywhere, attempting to understand its origins, its full story, purpose, meanings and messages.
Overwhelmed by the experience of having worked to manifest this work and the sensitivities surrounding it and 9/11, Marilyn, family, and select others spend ten years reflecting on the work, her experiences and considering how to most appropriately and respectfully share the work publicly others.
